Start by getting one or two clients….then use word of mouth…if you are good, they will come.

I have learnt to play a plastic guitar really well with guitar hero – what a waste! Is there a program or game that can teach me to play guitar for real?

If you are thinking of playing folk or country music it’s probably easiest to start by learning chords and strumming. Also take this approach if you’re not sure what you want to do on guitar. You can play a really easy song reasonably well in a week and can be playing effectively in less than a year.

Some good chords to start with are G, C, D, Am, Em, Am7, D7.

After you can play 5-10 chords, you can start practicing scales.

About 6 months in, it’s time to really focus on getting a steady beat and then playing more interesting rhythms. Playing a steady beat is much harder than it seems so don’t start with that (unless you’re a drummer or something).

If you are inspired to learn guitar because of guitar players you’ve seen, it’s a good idea to watch what they do (hopefully you can get some video of them) and try to do the same things yourself. This is more fun than learning from a book, although you can do that too.

Oh, and I almost forgot: If you want to play guitar well you have to have a strong grip in both hands. Get a foam grip exerciser (made especially for guitarists, under $5) and squeeze it for about 5 minutes a day. This makes more of a difference than the 1 hour of practicing you do.

I’m really planning to go there when I’ll go to college.The problem is, many people said that Stanford University is a high class college. So right now I want to know exactly how much and what is the tuition.Do you need to be good at sports,music,above a 4.0 grade point average, anything so that you would get a scholarship? It costs $37,380 a year. It’s pretty hard to get into Stanford, but its definitely possible. I was considering going there, & my counselor said that if I applied, I could probably get in. My GPA is 4.8/5.0. Stanford also gives out scholarships based on your academic merit & class rank, but you have to be one of the top students in the nation to eligible for these awards. For example, I think you might be eligible for some type of scholarship if youre ranked in the top 5% of your class. Like you said, they also give them out for being good at sports, music, etc, but those are only a few ways to get a scholarship. They might even offer you a scholarship based on your application essays or SAT or ACT scores

I have an electric guitar that I’ve owned for years, and I really want to start learning on it, but I haven’t had the time or patience. I’ve been playing a viola for ten years, so the whole stringed instrument thing isn’t novel, but the constant need to play multiple notes at once to form a chord is. Do you have any tips on how to kick start my education? Thanks!

The way I did it, which worked.

- Practice the simpler open chords, then move on to harder (For the beginner anyway) barre chords. Make sure you learn what’s going on when you do it too.

- Do chromatic scale patterns, maybe even for just 15 minutes a day. You will be surprised how quickly you improve your technical ability.

- Play songs! My first song was Manic Depression by Jimi Hendrix. Of course, I didn’t do the solo part, but that’s why you picked up a guitar in the first place! To play songs, and maybe make up your own! Try and emulate something you hear on a CD.

And remember, if you’re finding a passage really difficult, I can’t stress enough. Slow it down, break it into easy chunks, and gradually pick up speed. This will stop you from making a mess! Although I guess you know this already :\

I want to get acoustic guitar lessons but with my current crazy time-shifting job it is impossible for me to be available during decent hours. I have heard there are video lessons on the Internet but I would like to get feedback from someone who tried it.

There are video courses available that you can pause and replay when and as often as you want. It is a definite advantage over a teacher who will be available for only an hour or so at the time and that you will have to pay by the hour.

I’m going to turn 16 pretty soon and I want to get a job to pay for piano tuition. I’m still in high school. Do I need a work permit or something from my school? I live in Southern California, for those that know near Walnut. I’m not so trusting of online-jobs. Where is a good place to work and what is it’s pay?

You will need a work permit, and usually your school will be the place to get it (check with your Career Center, ROP Program Coordinator). When I started working I was 15, and I worked Fast Food (always willing to hire a teenager) as well as working retail at the local mall. If you know what your career aspirations are you may be able to find work in yoru chosen field. For example, want to work with Animals? Try to see if the local vet is willing to hire you to clean animal cages or answer phones, or perhaps a local Dog/Cat Boarding facility may have some work. Good luck on your job search!

I would like to emabark on the doubtless long and tedious journey of becoming a hobby-Mariachi.
There’s just one problem:
I’m in New Zealand, not exactly Mariachi Central, and Dunedin at that is really more suited to learning bagpipes.

Does anyone know of anyone who teaches Mariachi-style guitar in Dunedin?

Never mind Mariachi-Style teachers now – start by learning the Basics! You can build on that any time, and even refine your style by book or video. (well, a real teacher is better, of course, but it’s a start, isn’t it?)
