Would you recommend starting on acoustic or electric guitar for someone who is learning guitar?

17th January

Im 20 and I love the guitar but I do not know how to play and am going to start learning…Im really into the electric guitar and not so much for the acoustic but I have heard it is easier to start on acoustic and then move electric. Any Ideas?

Hello there,

You answered your own question. You said you are really into electric guitar and not so much into acoustic. Why learn what you are not into?

Learning is enough of a challenge without having to force yourself to learn something that is not really of interest.

If I may, I would suggest you look for a good quality used guitar for a starter. You can get a used good quality guitar for about the price of a new lesser quality guitar. More bang for your buck. Also, the new guitar loses value the moment you take it home. If in 6 months you decide you really do not want to bother learning to play, you are out less money.

By good quality, I do not mean top of the line guitars. Good quality starter guitars. Squier by Fender is fine. Epiphone by Gibson is also fine.

You can check your local want ads, Craig’s List, the Trader and the like. Even look on eBay. Pick up the best you can afford. However plan on spending about 1/2 of your money on the guitar. The amp is a big part of your sound. A great guitar played through a lousy amp sounds lousy. A mediocre guitar played through a great amp sounds decent. Don’t underestimate the amp when you are shopping.

Later,

How long can I shave off having to practice if I started learning guitar using Guitar Hero?

14th January

Hi I have started learning sweet child o’ mine on guitar hero, when i get my real guitar when will i be able to play it all thanks

0% It’s nothing like playing a real guitar. In fact knowing how to play real guitar actually makes playing the fake one harder. You keep wanting to move your hand up and down the neck. You will have to learn to play real guitar, playing Guitar Hero won’t teach you that..

Is it easy to go from bass to learning electric guitar?

1st January

I’ve been playing bass for about 3 years (no lessons or tutors). Is it easy from going from bass, to learning guitar?

If you understand the theory behind the instrument (mainly just the tuning) then you will pick it up easily. It take a minute to get used to the chord shapes etc, everything will seem a bit fiddly at first, it gets easier! You should be fine. It is a lot less stress on your hands so beware of breaking strings.

What is the best way to start learning guitar?

27th December

I have an electric guitar that I’ve owned for years, and I really want to start learning on it, but I haven’t had the time or patience. I’ve been playing a viola for ten years, so the whole stringed instrument thing isn’t novel, but the constant need to play multiple notes at once to form a chord is. Do you have any tips on how to kick start my education? Thanks!

The way I did it, which worked.

- Practice the simpler open chords, then move on to harder (For the beginner anyway) barre chords. Make sure you learn what’s going on when you do it too.

- Do chromatic scale patterns, maybe even for just 15 minutes a day. You will be surprised how quickly you improve your technical ability.

- Play songs! My first song was Manic Depression by Jimi Hendrix. Of course, I didn’t do the solo part, but that’s why you picked up a guitar in the first place! To play songs, and maybe make up your own! Try and emulate something you hear on a CD.

And remember, if you’re finding a passage really difficult, I can’t stress enough. Slow it down, break it into easy chunks, and gradually pick up speed. This will stop you from making a mess! Although I guess you know this already :\

Most of all; have fun :D

Am I learning guitar the right way?

16th December

I have just started learning how to play guitar and I’m afraid that I may not be learning it the right way. My friend is also learning, but he seems to be learning differently and I’m worried that I am learning the wrong things. Suggestions would be great.
I have been learning chords and strumming techniques so far.
I have been learning chords and strumming so far.

It depends on your style of music. It you want metal, then learn pwr chords and lead riffs. The open chords can come later. If you want accoustic stuff, then learn open chords and minors. If you want something in the middle, then go for open chords, bar-chords, blues root and relative. It really depends on your style of music and your equipment. Accoustic guitars are best for building strength in fingers and open chords, but sometimes takes longer to build up speed. Electrics are good for building speed and bar chords. This doesn’t apply to all, but is common. It really depends on the individual.

What Techniques Do You Suggest For Learning Guitar?

6th December

I haven’t played in years and I want to learn how to play. What kind of Techniques do you suggest for learning how to play guitar both by hand, knowing which note is on what fret, and by Ear, knowing the notes by sound.

1.) Practice, Practice, Practice. With a little bit of practice, you can get a lot better.
2.) Continuously go over the notes and frets in your mind. The dots on the fretboard mark every other fret and the double dots mark the 12th fret, which is an octave higher than the open string.
3.) If you can sing it, you can learn it by ear, but it may take longer for some people. It’s not that hard if you can go over each note in your mind of the song.
4.) Like everything else, knowing notes by sound comes with time.

I hope that helped =)
