I’m 11 and left handed but I play guitar right handed. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana played simulary; he was right handed, but he played left handed. If the strumming is easier than fretting, then shouldn’t you do the fretting with your dominant hand? So why do you have to play the difficult way?

You know, I’ve wondered about that myself a number of times, but I’ve still never come up with a decent answer. Maybe it isn’t as hard to coordinate your left fingers as it is to coordinate other muscles in your left hand? For example, when you type on a keyboard, it isn’t any easier to type with your right hand than with your left hand.

That’s just a bunch of speculation, but I hope it helps!

I wanted to play Guitar Hero for NDS but I cant play because there is no guitar grip, how can i solve this?

I play guitar with my friend, and we do not want to play the same thing.
i would like to harmonize her part, or play something different.
What chords could i play while she plays B flat, f, and e flat?

The easiest way to complement a friend is to use a capo and play the same chord in a different position. In fact if you learn the CAGED capo method, you can easily do this for whole songs. I don’t have time to get into that, but to answer your specific question, here are some options for you:

Bb = capo 1 A or capo 3 G
F = capo 1 E or capo 3 D
Eb = capo 1 D or capo 3 C

There is also a completely separate method for an electric guitar to complement an acoustic guitar using 3 string chords, but from your question, I don’t think that’s what you’re going for. If you’re interested in learning more about the capo system, I teach it in my "Essentials" series on my site.

I need to play lead guitar for an audition but must have a prerecorded second guitar as a back track. I am only allowed a single amp – mine being an old tube Marshall 100watt – and no other PA system. Any suggestion on how to create a consistant sound? If this amp will not work any thoughts on a contemporary one that will? Thanks. Robert H.

It’s not an optimal thing, but it could possibly be done.

It kind of depends on which Marshall you have. If it’s one of the old Super Leads with 4 inputs and two volume controls, then you could theoretically plug your music source into one of them and your guitar into the other. However, your EQ will be compromised between the guitar and the music source.

If you only have one input, you could use a small external mixer to combine your guitar and music source, and then send it to the amp. However, that would require you to run the amp very clean. So, if you’re counting on the amp for distortion, this option is out.

There are several practice amps out there now that have an input for a music source that bypasses the guitar preamp and EQ. So, you can have your guitar distorted and your music clean. Fender has a couple of amps like this now, as does Line 6. If you’re looking for a 1-box solution, this is probably your best bet.

Guitar Hero is a great game but something about it is lacking realism. We have found a way to use a real guitar during Guitar Hero play.

You will need:

1. Xbox 360 Controller
2. 4 Wires cut at 2-3 feet each
3. Soldering Iron (or electrical tape)
4. Real Guitar

So, I am trying to learn how to play guitar and sing at the same time. I can play the guitar. I can sing. I just can’t put the two together. Like my brain will only coordinate with one or the other separately. Is it best to write the song and sing it first then add the guitar later to it? What is your advice?

Everyone may look at it differently, I dissagree with the comment about doing one conscience and the other not. Practice is key man. When you finally do it right you will notice that you are not concentrating on playing guitar or singing. You will be hearing the combination of both as one final product and you just do adjustments to one or the other to make it fit. If you concentrate on singing your guitar will come out of rhythm a bit. But that is the big word , rhythm. Get that right with your strumming hand and you won’t screw it up. Start with an easy song. Pick one that the rhythm is playing the same on all the chords of the song. And like that other guy said "get your guitar on autopilot" great analogy. Also try to humm with your guitar before you start singing. Notice the way your voice should change with the change of chords.

Practice practice. you will get it.
